The Art and Science of Valuing in Psychotherapy: Helping Clients Discover, Explore, and Commit to Valued Action Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Professional)

The Art and Science of Valuing in Psychotherapy: Helping Clients Discover, Explore, and Commit to Valued Action Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Professional) Review

Valuing is a key component of the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) six-process model. During this process, therapists help clients identify and decide on their values and commit to acting according to those values. The Art and Science of Valuing in Psychotherapy is the therapists' guide to conducting this delicate and important work without imposing their own beliefs on the client, defining values in overly narrow or overly nebulous ways, or confusing values with judgments, likes and dislikes, morals, or cultural norms. Readers also receive guidance for teaching their clients to apply these values to their lives in practical and concrete ways to increase clients' self-esteem and life satisfaction.

The second half of this book offers practical tools therapists can use for values treatment intervention, including metaphors, defusion exercises, guided imagery exercises, scripts for role play, worksheets, assessments, and more. The final chapter of the book demonstrates how the values context can be used in conceptualization and interventions in the workplace, in organizations, and on the community level.

Although this book is based on ACT, it can be used by anyone working in psychotherapy or counseling. The authors discuss cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and relational frame theory (RFT) in addition to the ACT model.

Direct Action

Direct Action Review

In this compulsive page-turner, six-time New York Times bestselling author John Weisman blows the lid off one of Washington's deepest real-world secrets. The CIA, currently incapable of performing its core mission of supplying critical and time-sensitive human-based intelligence for the global war on terror, must now outsource the work to private contractors. Drawing on real-world crises and actual CIA operations, Direct Action takes readers deep inside this new and unreported covert warfare that is being fought on a daily basis by anonymous shadow warriors all across the globe.

Racing against the clock and shuttling between Washington, Paris, and the Middle East, one of those shadow warriors, former CIA case officer Tom Stafford, must slip below the radar to uncover, target, and neutralize a deadly al-Qa'ida bombmaker before the assassin can launch simultaneous multiple attacks against America and the West. And as if that weren't enough, Stafford must simultaneously open a second front and mount a clandestine war against the CIA itself, because for mysterious and seemingly inexplicable reasons the people at the very top of the Central Intelligence Agency want him to fail.

The characters and operations in Direct Action are drawn from true-life CIA personnel and their real-world missions. With Direct Action, John Weisman confirms once again Joseph Wambaugh's claim that "nobody writes better about the dark and dirty world of the CIA and black ops."

Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds: A Pharmacological Reference Guide to Sites of Action and Biological Effects

Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds: A Pharmacological Reference Guide to Sites of Action and Biological Effects Review

When introduced to the human body, bioactive metabolites produced by plants for self defense bind to particular biochemical targets, most notably to proteins involved in signaling by hormones and neurotransmitters. This, essentially, is the basis for the effects of herbal medicine. While herbal medicine preparations may act by complex synergistic interactions, molecular explanations of herbal medicine efficacy and side effects ultimately require definition of the biochemical targets of individual plant bioactive constituents.

Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds is a comprehensive and user-friendly reference guide to biochemical targets of plant defensive compounds. With 500 pages of tables, it presents a mine of succinctly summarized information relating to bioactive compound structures, plant sources, biochemical targets and physiological effects that can be readily accessed via chemical compound, plant genus, plant common name and subject indexes. With introductory chapters providing reviews of the structural diversity of plant defensive compounds and biochemistry, this book is an invaluable reference for biomedical professionals in the fields of alternative/complementary medicine, natural product chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, and botany.

Color and Money: How Rich White Kids Are Winning the War over College Affirmative Action

Color and Money: How Rich White Kids Are Winning the War over College Affirmative Action Review

What is the real story behind the fight over affirmative action in college admissions? Veteran journalist Peter Schmidt reveals truths that will outrage readers and forever transform the debate.

His book exposes the hidden agendas of all sides, revealing how:

* The conservative opposition to affirmative action preaches equality in college admissions, yet guts programs that help poor kids get in the running.

* The higher education establishment feeds lies to the federal courts and the public about the benefits of affirmative action, and attempts to squelch any talk about how selective colleges’ favoritism toward the privileged undermines professed commitments to diversity.

* Affirmative action has evolved from a means of bringing about social justice into a tool colleges cynically use to sell themselves and attract corporate support.

* Lower and middle class students of all races are being lost in the affirmative action struggle.

The underlying premise is that affirmative action is a band aid used to hide a very deep wound that neither side of the debate has much interest in treating any time soon. The real winners in the war over college affirmative action are rich white kids, whose spot on the inside track is secure no matter which side comes out on top. The real losers are African- American, Hispanic, and Asian-American kids, who continue to have the deck stacked against them, and those worthy white kids who lack cash and connections and find their futures sacrificed by colleges for “diversity” and the almighty dollar.

Unafraid to shine a harsh light on schools such as Harvard, the University of Michigan, Princeton, and the University of California, this is a startling and brave book that will inspire a national dialogue on class, race, and education.

Spirit in Action: Moving Meditations for Peace, Insight, and Personal Power

Spirit in Action: Moving Meditations for Peace, Insight, and Personal Power Review

"When we let go and allow the Spirit to move us in prayer, the body will follow. This is surrender to the voice of the soul at its deepest levels."
                                                                                                [pg. 46, 47]

Movement is spirit in action. Embodied prayer--prayer that combines a meditative mind-set with physical motions--is practiced in spiritual traditions from all over the world: from praying with clasped hands and bowed head, to prostrations and kneeling, to davening, whirling, sitting in meditation, and stretching in yoga. The body has always been involved in expressions of worship, gratitude, celebration, and blessing.

With photographs illustrating easy-to-follow, step-by-step movements, Spirit in Action introduces an exciting new kind of mind-body practice--moving meditations that give added physical power to our prayers for guidance, healing, and insight. Seekers of all religious backgrounds and traditions will enjoy and benefit from these energy-enhancing rituals. The author, a chiropractor and workshop teacher of embodied prayers, draws upon ancient, universal principles of sacred dance to create exercises that promote self-awareness, connect us to that which we consider divine, and cultivate compassion and a heightened consciousness that carries into daily activities. Extending the teaching of Dr. Lamberti's Aerobic Prayer™ video series, Spirit in Action will help you

- Thaw out frozen emotions
- Eliminate fear and negativity
- Create a flexible, joyful body and mind
- Direct your brain with focused, positive intentions
- Translate inner strength into spiritual action
- Experience healing on many levels
- Strengthen your spiritual connections
- Make friends with your body

Specific stretches and movements that gently use every part of the body combine with musical meditations, personal explorations, and visualizations to channel Divine Energy into a conscious celebration of life and spirit.

Super Bitches and Action Babes: The Female Hero in Popular Cinema, 1970-2006

Super Bitches and Action Babes: The Female Hero in Popular Cinema, 1970-2006 Review

With actress Pam Grier's breakthrough in Coffy and Foxy Brown, women entered action, science fiction, war, westerns and martial arts films--genres that had previously been considered the domain of male protagonists. This ground-breaking cinema, however, was--and still is--viewed with ambivalence.

While women were cast in new and exciting roles, they did not always arrive with their femininity intact, often functioning both as a sexualized spectacle and as a new female hero rather than female character. This volume contains an in-depth critical analysis and study of the female hero in popular film from 1970 to 2005. It examines five female archetypes: the dominatrix, the Amazon, the daughter, the mother and the rape-avenger. The entrance of the female hero into films written by, produced by and made for men is viewed through the lens of feminism and post-feminism arguments. Analyzed works include films with actors Michelle Yeoh and Meiko Kaji, the Alien films, the Lara Croft franchise, Charlie's Angels, and television productions such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Alias.

Future Search: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground in Organizations and Communities

Future Search: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground in Organizations and Communities Review

When the term future search appeared in Productive Workplaces (Weisbord, 1987), so many people sparked to it that we decided, after trying fancier names like strategic futures conference, to retain it. The response to the concept led to Discovering Common Ground (Weisbord et al, 1992), a work that pulled together principles and practices for valuebased action planning. The earlier book presented a variety of high participation models and cases, most based on the Emery/Trist Search Conference, including early experiments with future search. In this book we focus on our evolving future search model. Here we go deeply into our sources and rationale, our experiments with tasks and techniques, and examples of how we and many colleagues have employed this model and its variations. We also provide a philosophical rationale for our design and facilitation practices.
